Pentecost is a major Christian holiday observed 49 days after Easter, commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Jesus’s disciples in Jerusalem.
Pentecost falls on a Sunday and marks the birth of the Christian Church. The word “Pentecost” comes from the Greek meaning “fiftieth day” (counting from Easter). In the biblical account, the Holy Spirit appeared as flames of fire and enabled the disciples to speak in different languages. The holiday is celebrated in Christian denominations worldwide and is also called Whit Sunday in some traditions.
